Tips for drawing out a basic garden plan

Tips for drawing out a basic garden plan

Sometimes you already have a plan of your house from the architect (construction or renovation) on which you can base yourself. If you are lucky, the garden was also measured with this. The land registry plan available online is often only partially correct and not very accurate.

You must draw this plan to scale . Scale 1/100 is preferred. Scale 1/100 means that 1 meter is actually drawn on the plan as 1 cm long.

Take an A3 size sheet, which works best. Unless the garden is very large, then you take two A3 sheets next to each other, but most gardens are no larger than 42 m x 29.7 m. So an A3 is a good size for most gardens. Also include the dimensions of the large distances.

What do you indicate on the plan?

All structures that are permanent and must be preserved:

  • The garden borders
  • The house or building : only the outer edges, but also the location of doors, windows, sliding windows.
  • Walls (please also indicate the height and low walls)
  • The current pavements that you are sure must remain in the design
  • Manhole covers and also, for example, the place where the fuel oil should be delivered, ... and everything that you have to take into account in the design
  • Water drainage : downspout or grates for water drainage
  • All fixed elements that cannot change place , for example trees and shrubs that must certainly be preserved. Also garden shed, shed, garage, etc
  • Also take the dimensions of all mobile elements (bench, house, movable playground equipment) that you would like to keep and include in the new design.

Good luck and above all: have fun!
